This is an extremely rare Stave LE Puzzle. First, it was originally purchased by Mrs. Josiah Lilly, an heir to the Eli Lilly company, who was a very early supporter of Stave Puzzles. This puzzle is part of a 4 part series on the seasons.
We believe these were handpainted and each one that we has seen has different coloring and is unique. What is more special about “Winter Fantasy” is that it is the first puzzle designed by Stave (and thus the first LE as well). So this particular puzzle, numbered at only #12 of a 200 puzzle LE series, was one of the first LE’s that Stave produced as we understand this was Stave’s first Limited Edition puzzle they produced. Additionally, Steve Richardson’s initials are on this Jester piece, with no “co-initials” as we have seen on many Staves from this period, so there is a good chance he cut this one himself. Don’t miss this chance to add a very special LE to your Stave collection.
In very good shape given the age. The tissue paper has been replaced, there is a little wear on the pieces (see pics), but pretty minor. On the back we noticed 2 pieces with small chips on bottom wood layer (again pretty small).
